This is Kumeyaay Land

At SURJ San Diego we make a point of acknowledging that the land we walk on was forcibly taken from the people who had called it home for over 10,000 years. When it comes to sustainability and stewardship of that land, in just 400 years white people have messed things up.

The time is now to make restitution to the Kumeyaay people and to honor what they’ve always known about this land near the sea.

We have a fleeting chance to begin to heal the scars of our past and the wounds of a disrespected planet. There isn't a second to lose.

Housing Justice

When you see someone holding up a cardboard sign at an intersection, does a little voice in your head say, “That could never be me”?

If so, that voice is lying to you.

The truth is that the cracks in our society are more like chasms. Extreme wealth disparities interact with out-of-control housing costs, which interact with a pathetic excuse for a healthcare system, and on and on.

When we start seeing our unhoused neighbors as exactly that--fellow humans who don’t have roofs over their heads--everything changes.
